Not every superstar is going to have a good run as a singles wrestlers – some are just made to succeed in the tag team division.
Many of the successful tag teams we have seen have been made by the wrestler’s own choices – they knew their partner and wanted to work with them as a team.
But oftentimes, two stars are thrown together to create an unusual tag team. This could be risky as the whole endeavour won’t go anywhere if there’s no chemistry or synchronicity between the two singles competitors.
A thrown together tag team’s success depends on a lot of factors too apart from just the two members clicking with each other – booking, the timing and the reason why they were matched together are also important factors that can make or break a team.
But oftentimes, some teams just work, and maybe it’s because everything was perfect and the stars aligned correctly. So let’s take a look at five tag teams that were thrown together and worked.
5. Breezango
The pairing of two under-utilised stars Tyler Breeze and Fandango have never won a tag team championship, but won many hearts because of their chemistry on screen.
The two were put together when Breeze formed an alliance with R Truth in 2016. They defeated Goldust and Fandango multiple times but a double turn would occur as Breeze and Fandango aligned and turned on their former partners, Goldust and R Truth.
They then started experimenting with the Fashion Police gimmick and having more of their entertaining skits made due to demand from fans.
Breezango are still a comedy act for the most part, but they have come close to winning the tag titles before. After a hiatus, Breezango reunited on last month’s NXT where a returning Fandango said the team needs a makeover as “Breezango: Re-Imagined”. Only the future will tell what’s in store for them, but we hope they do something interesting and get a little serious.
4. Cesaro and Tyson Kidd
Anyone who has been following Cesaro’s career would tell you that before The Bar, Cesaro was part of one of the most impressive tag teams on the roster – with Tyson Kidd.
The two united in December 2014 and wowed audiences with their impressive in-ring ability, individually and in synchronicity. Some of WWE’s best matches of 2015 were put together by these couple of technician performers.
Kidd and Cesaro won their only gold in February 2015 at Fastlane. The success of the team was tragically cut short when Kidd suffered a serious injury in a dark match against Samoa Joe which put an end to his career.
3. John Morrison and The Miz
John Morrison and The Miz came during a time when ECW the brand was revived, and both were struggling to make their presence felt as singles competitors.
The duo was also ahead of its time – they ran a web-only gossip show called “The Dirt Sheet” where, as the name suggests, they gave their opinions on rumours from the squared circle.
On the ring front, the team was highly successful as they were able to win the World Tag Team Championship and the WWE Tag Team Championship. They held the titles for an impressive 113 and 250 days respectively.
2. Team Hell No
This odd pairing of a man and a monster came about in 2012 when Daniel Bryan and Kane’s frustrations from their failure of winning gold led them in anger management together, where they were forced into a tag team by Dr. Shelby.
The ridiculous story only turned into a successful one as the duo were able to capture the tag titles together later in the same year for a 245-day reign. The team were highly entertaining because of their gimmick which showed Bryan’s ability to play a likeable character.
The partnership set in motion Bryan’s “Yes Movement” was able to show a side that wasn’t seen before. It also showed that hilarious and unlikely pairings could work really well if done correctly.
1. The Bar
Much like Team Hell No, The Bar also had their beginnings with a mutual hate for each other. We have seen this trope of putting two people who can’t stand one another and making them work together before, and The Bar was no different. But what set them apart was how naturally the two seemed to overcome their petty squabbles and decide to make the most out of their given opportunity.
Originally together in a feud, the two were forced to work together as a team by then-Raw General Manager Mick Foley after a Best of Seven series culminated in a tie in 2016.
The two had completely different dynamics – Cesaro was a babyface and a crowd favourite, while Sheamus was relentlessly booed with his mohawk.
After a bar fight and talk of their apparent split as a tag team, the two finally decided to stand on common ground and co-operate, and then went on to win the Raw Tag Team Championship from The New Day.
Since then, they have worked together to capture the Raw titles an addition three times and the SmackDown titles once, to make one of the most dominant thrown together tag teams.
When you hear about teams being thrown together, it’s usually due to poor booking or lazy narrative. But it does show that something when do you throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks, it turns out to be solid gold.
