Driver

The original is a game I only recently tried and It hasn’t aged well, there is also THAT introduction level which stands the test of time as still frustratingly hard. However, It’s another game in the series that I believe was so good it deserves another chance.

Driver San Francisco. When was the last time you played a game and thought, ‘that was a new experience’. Released in 2011 across most platforms by Ubisoft, this is another game that scored around 80 on Metacritic (except the Wii version, but how many Wii versions of games DID score the same as their more powerful counterparts?).

    Driver San Francisco

It featured something called “Shift”, which allowed you to float through the sky from your car, and then pick a new car that was driving nearby. At first, it was hard to get used to but after a while, it became second nature. If you realised late you had missed a turn, rather than stop your car to reverse back, you could just pick a new car that was going in the right direction. This also meant that you could always look for a faster or more pretty car than the one you were currently in.

It also had some interesting ideas on its multiplayer suite which made great use of the “Shift” mechanic.

I’d love to see this being revisited, but it has me wondering how Ubisoft could work a tower climbing mini-game into a driving game. I’m sure they would find a way to do so.
