Blast Corps
My last N64 pick on my list. I’m sure I picked this up for about £5.00 from Woolworths. The cost and my age at the time might explain why I had so much fun, as a revisit showed this has not aged well. However, I’ve just found out it received the second-highest rating Metacritic rating for an N64 game in 1997, so I wasn’t alone in enjoying my time with it.
This was released at the beginning of Rare’s golden period for the N64 and it’s another game that truly had original ideas. Before this, they had just completed Killer Instinct Gold and after Blast Corps was released went on to do a small game called Goldeneye….I was about to say not a bad run of three games, but looking back it was a far longer run than 3.
Blast Corps was 57 levels of puzzle-based destruction, where you used different vehicles to destroy buildings to let a runaway nuclear missile carrier pass safely. Read that back and tell me it doesn’t sound like a giggle.
Give it online leader boards and controls that make sense on a modern controller and it would be the type of dumb fun we all love from time to time. Also please note, although the controls weren’t great in the original, keep the slightly off isometric camera.
