Get To Know The Writers is a new series brought to you by TWM, in the fourth instalment we meet the absolute tour de force that is Shalene Hixon.
Who Is Shalene Hixon?
Hi there! I’m Shalene Hixon and I have been with TWM since August 2018. I started off doing reviews of the 2018 Mae Young Classic, and then it was off to the races from there. Along with writing about WWE/NXT and women’s wrestling, I am now one of TWM’s lead AEW writers and have even started to venture into the world of joshi wrestling. It has been a fun and wild ride; the site has changed so much and I’m extremely excited to see where it goes in the future!
When I’m not writing, you can normally find me doing a variety of different things. These include cheering on my favorite sports teams: the Pittsburgh Penguins, Steelers, and Pirates, playing video games (and occasionally streaming them on Twitch!), coming up with ideas for my next tattoo, and enjoying all things Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Drag Race!
When did you get into wrestling?
I can thank my mom for introducing me to wrestling. If I remember correctly, she showed me an episode of Monday Night RAW back in the mid-2000s, and I have been hooked ever since!
What is it like being a Woman who works in wrestling media?
It has its ups and downs, but overall, it has been a great experience. For quite a while, it was very rare to see a woman in wrestling media. But times are changing, and it is so cool to be even a small part of that change. I love getting to work with a group of incredible women and show that we know what we’re talking about. While there are some who don’t necessarily agree, you have to focus on the people who do support you. At the end of the day, you just have to keep working hard and know that there are people out there who genuinely appreciate it.
What is your opinion on the progress female wrestlers have made in the industry?
The progress they have made is incredible. To see all the opportunities they have received over the last several years is something I never would have imagined seeing when I was a kid. Growing up, it was hard for me to be invested in women’s wrestling because of how they were being portrayed. Now, a good portion of my favorite wrestlers are women and it is so much easier to connect with them in the ring and out. They keep breaking the glass ceiling and I cannot wait to see them continue to make more history in the coming years.
