Welcome to my newest brainchild, Fight Forever! If the title didn’t give it away, I’m going to look at two wrestlers who have amazing chemistry in the ring together and make the fans want to see them keep going week after week after week.
Now, before I reveal who our first rivalry is, let me take a moment to enlighten you. In the world of professional wrestling, rivalries can make or break careers. Look at some of the most intense and memorable rivalries in history for a second. Steve Austin and The Rock, Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart, Trish Stratus and Lita, the list can go on and on. But the biggest thing to take away from each rivalry is that it had a profound effect on each person career going forward. For some, it was a launching pad to bigger heights. For others, the start of their decline. The biggest thing though is that they were memorable. Fans always wanted more between them and when it happened, they always delivered.
Our first rivalry comes to us from Japan, the World Wonder Ring Stardom franchise to be exact. With a whopping 84 matches between them to date in some capacity, our very first rivalry is AZM and Starlight Kid. Two amazing young women who just have absolutely insane chemistry in the ring together and the world ahead of them.
AZM, or Azumi, represents Queen’s Quest and is a techniker with six years of professional experience. Her first match, that I can find, was back in 2013 against Natsuki Taiyo in an exhibition match that went to a three-minute draw. Since then she has faced the likes of Io Shirai, Mayu Iwatani, Momo Watanabe and so many more. You see that and then you have to also realist that she’s still only eighteen years old right now! That means she’s been working as a wrestler since she was twelve and that is astonishing to me. Not only that, but AZM is clearly one of the best wrestlers in the world already. She’s young, she has a lot of time to improve further and expand her arsenal, but there is no reason that the High-Speed Bomb Girl cannot explode onto the world stage and be the best there is today.
Starlight Kid is an allrounder currently tied to the faction Oedo Tai after she was the last person eliminated in a stipulation match between STARS and Oedo Tai last month. Not much is known about her personal life, like how old she is, but that just adds to her mystery and aura. She became the first wrestler to wear her mask full-time in Stardom as part of her luchadora persona. Greatly influenced by Lucha libre, Starlight Kid has followed Mexican tradition for masked wrestlers, so her real name is not a matter of public record. The kid is fast, using her high speed and unique offence to rattle opponents. Being an allrounder gives her a big advantage at times as she can switch her styles up as she needs to. Like AZM, the sky is the limit for Kid and there is no telling just how good she will be years down the line.
AZM Vs. Starlight Kid – Fight Forever
I’ve seen people refer to Azumi and Kid as eternal rivals and I think that’s absolutely correct. It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen two performers in the ring with the youth and vigour of these two. It makes for super exciting matches and every time I see them in the ring together I am on the edge of my seat. Most recently, AZM took the W over Kid after Oedo Tai interfered in their match and caused a disqualification. Until that happened, it was another stellar match between the two. It’s honestly strange seeing Kid with the heels, but I am digging that she is going to try and dig into her darker side.
Out of their eighty-four matches against each other to date, nine of them have been one on one against each other. I find that strange and sad, but the faction aspect has to be taken into account since there are many tag matches between the two. Of those nine matches though, Kid holds the edge over AZM, with four wins, two losses and three draws that I can find. This may not be 100% accurate but counting is definitely not my strongest suit. This is obviously not counting the myriad of a triple threat, battle royale or tag matches the two have been involved with since 2015. Their very first match one-on-one was on 12/12/2015 which went to a five-minute time limit draw.
The beauty of this rivalry is that it really can be eternal. The two participants are young, having many years ahead of them to go against each other. Even better though is the fact that each match between them has been better than the last. Even the DQ from the 26th of June was phenomenal until Oedo Tai interfered. There is so much potential between these two that their rivalry could go down as one of the greatest rivalries in history. It could be better than anything we have seen so far. Now, I know we have had some absolutely insane rivalries to date, but believe me when I say that this one deserves your attention. They should, Fight Forever.
You can find the vast majority of their matches, if not all of them, on Stardom World if you’re interested. I’m sure you can even find some on Youtube. Wherever you decide to watch and follow this rivalry, I implore you to do so. You may find yourself awestruck by what you see. Or, if you’re like me, you’ll be hoping that these two young ladies do indeed Fight Forever.
