Another form of activism is seen directly in the costumes that wrestlers wear in the ring. From Sonya DeVille’s rainbow Pride attire to Darren Young’s singlet that states “Be Different” and the “Block The Hate” message on his trunks and armbands. As well as the events themselves, such as EFFY’s Big Gay Brunch, which showcases LGBTQIA+ wrestlers, making it clear that these wrestlers are more than just a special attraction within the industry.
This is something that is at the heart of Drag, which in itself is a rebellion against the binary options the world seems to want to make us all. Wrestling, especially in the last thirty years has had people trying to push the boundaries without harming or belittling the people they are referencing. Activism is needed within the wrestling scene, otherwise, it will stagnate and just become a relic of the past. It is what pushes it forward and brings new people, representation, and nuances to an entertainment field that has primarily been a boys club for a long time.
So in conclusion to this very long article (I am not in the least bit sorry) something as simple as a piece of clothing, whether it be a robe, an armband, the colours used or the cut of the attire, has a massive impact on what a wrestler is saying to the world, what their character is bringing inside and outside the ring and how they are perceived by the audience. It is never just about wrestling, otherwise, it wouldn’t be a show!
