ROCK VS TRIPLE H VS KURT ANGLE (2000)
It may seem strange to include a World Title main event match in a list of “forgotten” SummerSlam moments but despite the great careers that all three of these men had this flies under the radar somewhat. Perhaps it’s because the on-going storyline where Kurt was moving in on HHH’s main squeeze Stephanie McMahon was unceremoniously dropped weeks later when Tripper declared his heel character wouldn’t have stood for it. Maybe it’s because Angle was legitimately knocked loopy in this one and had to sit out part, and didn’t know what was going on when he came back. Yet it was set-up by a fantastically entertaining soap-opera storyline, saw three of the top in-ring stars of the era assemble an exciting match (as well as the two “veterans” covering ably for Angle’s situation) that went down before a white-hot crowd. It’s rarely mentioned by fans when discussing any of the man’s best matches, and perhaps it lack the historical significance to top those lists. But it’s still one hell of a match.
