This week’s Raw produced a truly historic moment, as for the first time ever, fans will see a Women’s Royal Rumble match.

For over 30 years, the Royal Rumble match has been one of the most eagerly anticipated and exciting matches in WWE. Since 1993, the winner of the Royal Rumble match has gone on to WrestleMania in one of the main event matches. But these matches, bar three exceptions, have been exclusively reserved for male superstars.

    That is until now.

Over the last few years, we’ve seen female superstars main event pay-per-views, compete in a Ladder Match, fight inside Hell in a Cell, battle in an Iron-Man Match, and earlier this month compete in the Middle-East for the first time ever.

Now, the 2018 Royal Rumble will for the first time in WWE history, feature a Women’s Royal Rumble match, with the winner going on to face their brands’ respective Women’s Champion in one of the main event matches at WrestleMania 34. While no official names or number of competitors have been announced into the match, it’s understood that with the exception of the Women’s Champions, the entire roster will compete in the match.

As with any Royal Rumble match, there’s also the likelihood of surprise entrants including NXT superstars and WWE legends.

The announcement, made by Chief Brand Officer, Stephanie McMahon has sent the wrestling world into a frenzy:

Following the historic announcement, WWE issued a statement declaring:

“The much-anticipated contest could not be coming at a more pivotal moment for the ground-breaking women of each brand. In addition to the elite competitors who continue to make the Women’s Evolution the cutting-edge phenomenon that it is, the main roster has experienced an influx of talented new Superstars over the past several months, including Raw’s undefeated Asuka, the returning Paige and her destructive Absolution cohorts, as well as SmackDown LIVE’s Riott Squad. This surge of talent will undoubtedly help make the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble a can’t-miss contest.”

The excitement was shared by their fellow competitors and legends, as reactions from within the wrestling world came in:
