WWE has been a much-maligned federation over the past ten years. Ever since they won the Monday Night Wars against WCW there has not been much in the way of competition in North America. This has led to some terrible practices by the WWE and one of the biggest issues plaguing the company is their title situation. The number of titles that the WWE has on its roster has saturated the roster and created a multitude of problems. After this past Wednesday, with the addition of an NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship, this issue has grown larger.

For starters, when you flood the roster with as many championships as you can you devalue the championships. Winning a championship in the WWE used to be a very prestigious thing. In the 80s/90s winning a title meant that you had reached a point in the company where they had faith in you as a performer.
It meant that you worked your butt off and earned the right to be called a champion. Now, everyone is winning titles, some of who may not have earned them. This takes away from any importance these titles may have.
There is also a huge issue being raised regarding the use of transitional champions. In the past, this has been an effective tool when getting the title from a face to a face without having the two wrestle.
Fast forward a decade and there are so many darn titles out there that someone may be used as a transitional champ who doesn’t deserve a title win, to begin with. This, again, devalues the championships that are supposed to elevate the performer.
Speaking of devaluing a championship, multiple titles means multiple championship reigns. Back in the golden age of wrestling, some men would go their entire careers without winning a championship.
This lent an air of importance to those titles as it could be that one would never get the chance to win a title. Anymore all we see is the inflated number of championship reigns that most wrestlers on the roster have. It comes across as if anyone can have multiple title reigns if they stick around long enough.
Too many titles on the roster have also brought up a problem that has been hurting the WWE for years and that is a very thin tag team division. Right now, after this past Wednesday, there are 4 tag team championships on the WWE roster.
This would be great if those divisions were paid any attention to but it is quite obvious this is not the case. All of the current tag team titleholders are thrown together tandems and the titles are used more for a prop than anything else.
If the WWE were to spend some actual time building teams instead of putting the titles on anyone they please then maybe the fans would take their tag champs more seriously.
The WWE needs to take a long hard look at their championship situation and make some changes before they ruin any credibility their titles have. If this has not happened already.
