SummerSlam Top 10 Countdown – By Michael Owen
No. 10 (14 Points) – Brock Lesnar vs. The Rock (August 25, 2002)
It’s easy to forget that Brock Lesnar became the youngest WWE Champion of all time at the age of 25 considering it was the first chapter in what is now a multiple sport career. It’s also sometimes easy to forget how dominant he was during his early wrestling career, he would destroy mainstays of WWE on a weekly basis and the crowd would eat it up.
Lesnar beat Rob-Van-Dam in the final of the King of the Ring tournament, not only winning the tournament but also earning a title shot in the process. He would switch to the SmackDown! Brand and feud with Hollywood Hulk Hogan briefly but he was biding his time until his shot at The Rock’s title.
Lesnar would get his title shot on August 25th, The Rock and Lesnar would have one of the greatest battles in SummerSlam history. The crowd was electric and on the edge of their seats, this match and the two people in it had the crowd in the palm of its hands.
Lesnar also had his manager, Paul Heyman, in his corner during this period of his career. The Rock got tired of his interruptions during the match and put Heyman in his place.
I’ll let Heyman take it from here…
“In fact, The Rock hit me with a Rock Bottom through a table,” Heyman noted. “I was not an equation. Brock Lesnar defeated The Rock cleanly to become the Undisputed WWE Champion, and in doing so, he put his boot on the neck of The Attitude Era and anointed himself the new reigning monarch of the WWE Universe.”
